  • Student Free Speech Case Settles Favorably For Bostwick & Jassy LLP's Clients
    A student free speech case brought against Fallbrook Union High School District by Bostwick & Jassy LLP and the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties on behalf of a journalism teacher and current and former high school students ended very favorably. The District agreed to change its journalism guidelines, promised to continue the high school's award-winning newspaper, wrote letters of praise to three former students, paid money to the former high school advisor and to Bostwick & Jassy and the ACLU.   • Bostwick & Jassy LLP Achieves Major Victory In Profit Participation Case
    Bostwick & Jassy LLP won summary adjudication for a client in a business dispute, disposing of claims for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. The victory gutted the opposing party's case.

  • Vick Selected To Be Co-Chair Of ABA's Forum On Communications Law, Training & Development Committee
    Kevin L. Vick will be a Co-Chair of the Training & Development Committee, which puts on an Annual Media Advocacy Workshop for aspiring media lawyers and law students at the American Bar Association Forum on Communications Law's Annual Conference.

  • Jassy Named Membership Chair Of ABA Forum On Communications Law
    Jean-Paul Jassy was appointed Membership Chair of the American Bar Association's Forum on Communications Law. With over 6,000 members nationwide, the Forum focuses on issues relating to legal counseling and representation of print media, the telecommunications industry, and electronic media.

  • Bostwick & Jassy LLP Scores Major Victory For Social Networking Site
    A federal judge dismissed every claim brought against Bostwick & Jassy's client, a well-known social networking site, relying heavily on the Section 230 immunity for Internet service providers. The claims were for copyright infringement, fraud, negligence, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress, stemming from an alleged theft of ideas. The case was dismissed with prejudice ¬ i.e., the plaintiff was not permitted to amend her complaint.

  • Bostwick & Jassy LLP Successfully Defends Internet Advertisers' Free Speech Rights
    Bostwick & Jassy LLP succeeded in knocking out all claims against its clients, several advertisers on the Internet. The clients were being sued by a content provider for supposedly aiding and abetting the dissemination of free content on the web. A judge dismissed the claims under California's anti-SLAPP statute. UPDATE: The Court awarded Bostwick & Jassy LLP's clients $40,000 in attorney's fees for having to defend against the meritless suit.

  • Vick Serves As Panelist At Media Law Meeting To Discuss Recent Right Of Publicity Decision, Christoff v. Nestlé
    Kevin L. Vick, co-author of a media amicus curiae brief in support of Nestlé, appeared on a panel at the quarterly meeting of the California Chapter of the Media Law Resource Center (MLRC) to discuss the California Supreme Court's recent right of publicity and Uniform Single Publication Act decision in Christoff v. Nestlé.

  • Bostwick & Jassy LLP Represents Bloomberg Media To Gain Access To Toyota's Safety Documents
    Bostwick & Jassy LLP filed a motion on behalf of major media outlet, Bloomberg, opposing an effort by Toyota to seal documents in a case concerning Toyota's safety record. The Court denied Toyota's request to seal the court documents.

  • Jassy Named A Southern California "Rising Star" For 5th Year In A Row
    For the fifth consecutive year, the publishers of Los Angeles Magazine and Law & Politics identified Jean-Paul Jassy as a "Rising Star," a peer-reviewed honor given to only 2.5% of attorneys in Southern California. He is identified as a "Rising Star" in the fields of First Amendment/media/advertising, general litigation and appellate law.

  • Bostwick & Jassy LLP Files Amicus Brief In U.S. Supreme Court Case, Citizens United v. F.E.C.
    Bostwick & Jassy LLP filed an amicus curiae brief on behalf of the California First Amendment Coalition in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, an important campaign finance case set before the U.S. Supreme Court. The brief takes the position that the current state of the law does not afford sufficient protection for the political speech of nonprofit entities. A copy of the brief can be found here.

    A federal court granted a motion to dismiss filed by Bostwick & Jassy LLP on behalf of the producers of "The Apprentice." The suit, brought by a disgruntled former applicant to be a contestant on the show, brought claims for defamation, interference with prospective economic advantage and breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing.
